The Badminton World Federation (BWF) Women’s Player of the Year award was announced on Monday (December 15). South Korea’s world number one An Se-young won the award for the third consecutive year, becoming the third player to achieve a three-peat after China’s Lin Dan and Malaysia’s “Datuk” Lee Chong Wei. She is also the first female player in history to achieve this milestone.
An Se-young swept the Super 1000 titles this season, and won the Super 750 titles at the Indian Open, Japan Open, China Masters, Denmark Open and French Open. She also won the Super 500 Australian Open and the Super 300 Orleans Masters.
According to statistics from the South Korean media outlet Chosun Ilbo, An Se-young reached the finals in eight of the ten mandatory open tournaments that the world’s top 15 players must participate in, and won all of them, demonstrating her complete dominance in the highest-intensity competitions.
If An Se-young wins the year-end tournament again, in addition to receiving the $24 champion’s prize, her total prize money for the season will exceed $100 million, making her the badminton prize money queen with the highest single-season prize money in history.
