The professional basketball championship in Benin is scheduled to tip off in April 2027, according to decisions finalized by the Beninese Basketball Federation. As detailed in a letter dated November 1, Bénin Web TV shared that the federation’s leadership presented the schedule during an ordinary federal council gathering held on October 31, 2026, in Abomey.
The upcoming start of the league represents a major organizational change for Beninese basketball, stemming from the approval of fresh statutes and internal bylaws at the Porto-Novo extraordinary general assembly on April 18, 2026. This overhaul of the foundational rules set the rule of one vote for every association while growing the executive committee from nine members to eleven.
December Amateur Championships Require Compliance Declaration Receipts
Amateur championships and tournaments for younger categories are scheduled for the December 2026 holidays.
Administrative procedures opened on November 2, 2026, and were set to conclude on December 16, 2026. Clubs must include a compliance declaration receipt in their documentation package to meet the new federation requirements.
Federation Eliminates Fees for Female Players
To encourage participation across the domestic game, the federation has eliminated licensing and registration fees for girls in the U12 through U20 categories, as well as for women competing in the amateur championship. In those amateur divisions, secure official lists will replace traditional physical license cards.
At the professional level, the federation established squad guidelines permitting each team to include a maximum of four foreign players. All four foreign athletes are allowed to play simultaneously on the court.
Organizers of training camps, independent tournaments, and other athlete gatherings must now obtain a federal promoter’s license, with specific conditions for issuance to be released at a later date. Meanwhile, the organization of youth tournaments in the U10, U12, and U14 brackets remains under the direct jurisdiction of regional leagues.
