Sebastián Leal secured a bronze medal in baseball 5 at the Youth Olympic Games in Dakar, Senegal, becoming just the second athlete born in Sonora to stand on a Youth Olympic podium. Grada Norte reported that the 17-year-old from Ciudad Obregón helped propel the Mexican delegation forward at the Complexe Tour de l’Oeuf on Tuesday, November 3, 2026.
Mexico clinched the bronze by defeating Kenya 2-1 with set scores of 13-4, 2-3, and 7-3. The match began at 8:00 AM local Sonora time. Cuba ultimately captured the gold medal after defeating Chinese Taipei 2-0 in the tournament’s final round.
Offensive Production in Dakar
Leal finished his tournament campaign with twelve runs scored, twenty hits, and eleven RBIs across 37 at-bats. His .541 batting average marked the fourth-best offensive output on the Mexican squad. He wore the number 8 jersey for the national team, which arrived in Senegal as the fifth-ranked side in the world.

The Mexican team compiled a 4-2 overall record during the youth tournament. They secured victories over Syria (2-1), France (2-0), Turkey (2-0 in the quarterfinals), and Kenya (2-1), while suffering losses to Kenya (0-2) and Chinese Taipei (1-2) in the semifinals.
Alongside Leal, the roster featured Jesús Efrén Espinoza Mendoza, Olivia Alexandra Frías Sánchez, Abril Yanina Martínez Hernández, Carlos Matías Mercado Gutiérrez, Isaac Jacobo Rodríguez Barraza, Erika Michel Solís Covarrubias, and Edsy Michel Valenzuela Noriega.
Precedent in Sonoran Sports History
Leal joins a very short list of athletes from Sonora to win a Youth Olympic medal. The only previous medalist from the region was sport shooter Andrea Ibarra Miranda, who earned a bronze medal in the mixed team shooting event at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Ibarra competed alongside Ukrainian partner Dmytro Honta on October 12, 2018.
Prior to the event, reports noted that Leal earned his selection following strong performances in domestic federated events, including appearances at the National Olympiad in 2025 and 2026 representing Sonora’s mixed junior varsity squad. Primarily playing as a midfielder, the 17-year-old made his international debut in the African nation as part of an eight-player national baseball 5 delegation.
Mexico Medals in Swimming
Mexico added a second bronze medal to its tally on the same day through swimming. Daniel Saborío Grillo, a 17-year-old athlete from Nuevo León and the Mexican flag bearer for the Dakar games, finished third in the 400-meter freestyle with a time of 3:52.72 minutes. These two bronze medals placed Mexico 41st in the overall medal standings through the fifth day of competition.
