JJ Gabriel has chosen to join Real Madrid after reaching a verbal agreement in principle with the Spanish club, drawing a close to a recruitment battle that involved several of Europe’s top sides, FootVal reported on November 4, 2026.
The 16-year-old English forward, born in October 2010, decided against signing his first professional contract with Manchester United, his youth academy, despite attempts by staff to secure his future at the club. Sky Germany outlined the verbal agreement between the player and Real Madrid, though no formal transfer has been announced officially yet.
How the Departure Unfolded at Carrington
The friction surrounding Gabriel’s future began months before the verbal agreement took shape. According to FootVal, the young forward stopped training at Carrington after leaving the club ahead of a Carabao Cup fixture against Brighton on September 16, 2026. Gabriel and his representatives pushed for an exit in September, dissatisfied with his prospects of breaking into the senior squad under Michael Carrick, whose own long-term future at the club remained uncertain.

Manchester United attempted to retain the academy product, but discussions stalled. Having turned 16 in October, Gabriel became eligible to sign with foreign clubs under international transfer regulations. FootVal reported that the player secured a Cypriot passport, a step designed to navigate post-Brexit rules that generally restrict international transfers for British minors under the age of 18.
The Battle Among European Giants
Real Madrid emerged as the frontrunner in a competitive market that drew interest from the Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich, and FC Barcelona. Italian journalist Matteo Moretto reported that Barcelona ultimately conceded defeat in their pursuit of the teenager, while BBC Sport noted that Real Madrid led the race.
Referred to widely in youth football circles as “Kid Messi” due to his dribbling ability, Gabriel enjoyed a prolific 2025–2026 campaign. According to Le Journal du Real, citing figures from AS, the forward scored 28 goals and provided 6 assists across 35 appearances in youth competitions, alongside a hat-trick against Sabah FK in the UEFA Youth League. Those displays earned him a brief taste of the senior setup during pre-season, where he made an appearance in a friendly against Atlético de Madrid.
Current Status in the Spanish Capital
Gabriel is already in Madrid, where reporters Ramón Álvarez de Mon and Ben Fernandes Santos observed him beginning training sessions while waiting for the final paperwork to clear, Le Journal du Real noted. TalkSPORT corroborated that the player has been training in Spain while awaiting finalization of the transfer.
Neither Real Madrid nor Manchester United has issued an official club statement confirming the transfer. Formalities regarding international registrations for underage players remain to be settled.
