Mourinho Urges Real Madrid to Sign Arsenal Defender Calafiori

José Mourinho is pushing Real Madrid to go all-in for Arsenal defender Riccardo Calafiori, placing the 24-year-old Italian at the very top of the club’s wishlist despite the obstacles stacked against a deal. The Spanish giants have already made enquiries through intermediaries about the left-back’s situation, according to reporting, but a move would be difficult: Calafiori is contracted at Arsenal until mid-2029 and is regarded by the London club as one of its key players.

Mourinho, who took charge of Real Madrid on 13 July 2026 on a three-year contract, wants Calafiori “héél graag” — very much indeed. The Portuguese manager sees him as a versatile defender and one of the best left-backs in the world, a profile that fits the way Mourinho likes to shuffle players around his back four, with Calafiori able to operate centrally as well as on the left flank.

Mourinho’s assessment of Calafiori

According to the TEAMtalk report cited in the coverage, Calafiori is described as the “outstanding left-back option” in world football in Mourinho’s eyes, and a “dream” signing for Madrid’s recruitment staff. The Italian is rated ahead of Manchester City’s Josko Gvardiol, with his ability to play both at left-back and in central defence a key reason for that ranking. Real Madrid’s interest is not expected to fade, with the club’s recruitment team sharing Mourinho’s view even after a summer rebuild of the back line that brought in Marc Cucurella, Ibrahima Konaté and Denzel Dumfries.

Arsenal refuses to sell Calafiori

Any move would run into Arsenal’s firm position. Calafiori, a 17-time Italian international, signed a deal running until medio 2029 when he joined from Bologna in 2024, and the club consider him strictly not for sale. Arsenal paid around €44 million to Bologna FC 1909 for him that year. His estimated market value has since risen to €65 million, according to Transfermarkt, but that figure is explicitly not the fee at which Arsenal would be willing to sell. The Gunners plan to open fresh contract talks with him in 2027, after extensions for Jurrien Timber, Martin Ødegaard and Declan Rice are closed — the same window Mourinho has pencilled in.

Injury cloud and the open question

Calafiori has been a regular in Mikel Arteta’s defence this season when fit, though he missed Arsenal’s EFL Cup defeat to Fleetwood with a hip and ribs issue picked up in the 2-0 league win over Everton the previous Saturday, with genuine concern flagged that he could also miss the upcoming Liverpool fixture. Arteta himself recently signed a new Arsenal contract running until June 2030. Whether Arsenal would entertain any offer for a player they regard as a cornerstone remains unanswered — and with no indication the club is willing to sell at any price, it is not yet known what, if anything, could persuade the Gunners to part with Calafiori before his contract expires.
