Lamine Yamal Breaks Mbappé’s Record: Most Champions League Goals Before Age 20

Lamine Yamal scored in the sixth minute against Aston Villa on Tuesday to break his tie with Kylian Mbappé and stand alone atop the Champions League scoring list for players under 20, reaching 14 goals, Mundo Deportivo reported. The Barcelona winger’s goal at the Camp Nou gave him sole possession of the record the two had shared at 13 apiece, with Mbappé no longer able to add to his total in the under-20 category.

The record measures goals in Europe’s premier club competition before a player’s 20th birthday, and Yamal’s path to it came across 37 Champions League appearances, according to Mundo Deportivo. Sport Aragón puts the match count at 36. Mbappé reached his 13 goals in just 23 matches, a reflection of arriving as an established forward, while Yamal has combined his scoring with a high volume of assists.

The two also debuted at different ages. Yamal made his Champions League bow at 16 years, two months and six days, Mundo Deportivo reported, while Mbappé debuted at 17 years, nine months and seven days. At Yamal’s current age, Mbappé had played only 15 matches — less than half of Yamal’s tally.

Yamal Had Already Beaten Mbappé at 19

Tuesday’s goal was not the first record Yamal has taken from the Real Madrid forward. He had already surpassed Mbappé in goals before age 19, reaching 11 during the knockout tie against Atlético de Madrid, compared with Mbappé’s 10 at the same age, Mundo Deportivo reported.

Yamal was born July 13, 2007, Sport Aragón reported, leaving him more than eight months and the remainder of the Champions League phase to extend the record before he turns 20.

Where Yamal and Mbappé Stand in This Season’s Scoring Race

In the 26/27 Champions League, Yamal’s three goals in four matches leave him level with Mbappé on three and one behind the current co-leaders on four, including Barcelona teammate Raphinha, Erling Haaland, Harry Kane and Luis Suárez, SPORT reported. Raphinha took the outright lead for Barcelona with a double against Aston Villa, the same match in which Yamal scored.

Yamal Scores Twice in Barcelona Win After Ballon d'Or Podium Finish

In Barcelona’s 6-1 LaLiga win over Alavés, he scored twice and assisted Fermín, becoming involved in three goals for the fifth time this season, MARCA reported. He has 12 goals and 11 assists in all competitions in under three months. The run followed a Ballon d’Or ceremony in which he finished third, behind winner Harry Kane and Mbappé.

Two Goals From Barcelona’s All-Time Top 10

Yamal needs just two more Champions League goals to pass club figures Gerard Piqué (14), Ronaldinho (14), Pedro Rodríguez (15) and Hristo Stoichkov (15) and enter Barcelona’s all-time top 10 scorers in the competition, Mundo Deportivo reported.

Behind Yamal and Mbappé in the under-20 scoring list, Erling Haaland has 10 goals, while Jude Bellingham, Patrick Kluivert, Karim Benzema and Raúl González each have six, MARCA reported.
