Football: Double record for Zinsberger and Co.

Manuela Zinsberger, Laura Wienroither and their Arsenal colleagues celebrated a double record in the English Women’s Super League on Saturday. “Gunners” and ÖFB goalkeeper Zinsberger kept her goal clean for the eighth time in a row in the 4-0 victory against London local rivals Tottenham Hotspur and set a new record in the upper house – and that in front of a record crowd.

Officially, 47,367 spectators found their way to Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium, erasing the previous record from the history books. In 2019, 38,262 fans took part in the same duel – but at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium at the time. The organizers had even expected an even better backdrop, as 53,737 tickets had been sold in advance.

Thanks to goals from Beth Mead (40′), Vivianne Miedema (44′, 67′) and Rafaelle Souza (54′), the supporters got their money’s worth. In addition, the 26-year-old Zinsberger once again left nothing to burn in goal. Her ÖFB teammate and right-back Wienroither, who slipped into the starting XI compared to qualifying for the Champions League, was also in action for the full distance.

Arsenal in good shape

It was Arsenal’s tenth league win in a row across the season – and that with an impressive goal difference of 39:2. In the current season, the “Gunners” also celebrated a 4-0 victory in the second game. In the first round, Brighton & Hove Albion were swept off the pitch by the same result.

“We played really well and the fans gave us incredible energy. Hopefully this is just the beginning,” said Mead, who received a standing ovation from fans in her 100th game in the English House of Lords. Arsenal also gained self-confidence for the second leg at Ajax Amsterdam on Wednesday, where after a 2-2 first leg there is still a lot of work to do in the fight for a place in the group stage of the “premier class”.
