Carlos Alcaraz Defeats Ben Shelton to Claim First París Masters 1000 Title

Carlos Alcaraz secured his first indoor ATP Masters 1000 crown on Sunday by defeating American player Ben Shelton 7-6(5), 7-5 at the Paris Masters.

The 23-year-old Spaniard overcame past struggles on indoor hard courts to claim his fifth title of the 2026 season and the 29th of his professional career.

Alcaraz admitted that the Parisian venue had historically been the site of some of the most painful defeats of his career before this breakthrough run.

This tournament is something I’ve been looking for a long time, Alcaraz said after receiving the trophy, according to match reports. Some of the toughest, most painful defeats of my career came here.

Prior to this week, the world number three had never advanced past the quarterfinals at the event since making his main draw debut in 2021.

The final at La Défense Arena paired Alcaraz against fourth-ranked Ben Shelton in a rematch of their grueling five-set quarterfinal at the US Open earlier in the year.

The opening set saw both players trade heavy serves and powerful groundstrokes before Alcaraz edged out the tiebreak 7-5 after one hour and five minutes of play.

Shelton gained momentum in the second set by breaking Alcaraz’s serve to take a 4-2 lead, but the Spaniard immediately broke back to level the score at 4-4.

Alcaraz broke Shelton again in the twelfth game to seal the championship in one hour and 59 minutes.

With this victory, Alcaraz joins David Ferrer as the only Spanish players to conquer the Paris Masters singles title, following Ferrer’s 2012 triumph.

The win marks the ninth Masters 1000 title of Alcaraz’s career, leaving only the tournaments in Canada and Shanghai absent from his collection of that tier.

I am very happy to find a way to return his serve and deploy my game on this court, Alcaraz stated in post-match remarks.

Alcaraz turns his attention to the final stretches of the ATP calendar, with the ATP Finals scheduled in Turin and the Davis Cup in Bologna remaining on his 2026 schedule.
