Doc Rivers Questions Giannis Antetokounmpo’s Basketball IQ and Offensive Efficiency

Giannis Antetokounmpo plays with unmatched athletic force, but his basketball intelligence falls short of elite tier, according to comments made by Doc Rivers and reported by sports outlet Chosun.com.

Rivers discussed Antetokounmpo during a recent appearance on the Bill Simmons Podcast.

During their tenure together in Milwaukee, Rivers coached Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard in an effort to contend for an NBA championship. The Bucks suffered first-round exits in the 2024 and 2025 NBA playoffs against the Indiana Pacers. Antetokounmpo missed the entire 2024 series with a calf strain and appeared in only 36 games last season, leading to Milwaukee missing the postseason for the first time in a decade.

Rivers noted that the forward relies heavily on sheer power rather than efficiency. I found myself thinking I wished he learned how to execute his power more efficiently, Rivers stated, according to Chosun.com.

While Antetokounmpo possesses elite physical traits and driving ability, Rivers pointed out that his offensive approach remains somewhat linear. The coach argued that this style fails to maximize the scoring gravity needed to elevate teammates.

Following his departure from Milwaukee, Antetokounmpo joined the Miami Heat.

Rivers addressed the broader tactical fit of his former star player’s approach. Antetokounmpo can do everything and attack opposing defenses. I respect Giannis’ aggressive play, but we need to focus on performances that help the team play better and win, Rivers said, as reported by Chosun.com.

Antetokounmpo continues to put up strong individual statistics in Miami, though early team success has lagged. The Heat opened the season with a 3–6 record.
