Xavier Mbuyamba suffers from cardiac arrhythmias and, after a long period of research and testing with doctors and FC Volendam, has decided to have an S-ICD implanted. An S-ICD is a subcutaneous defibrillator that functions as a monitor of the heart rhythm and ends any arrhythmias.

“The first phase of rest and recovery is now over, and I have already started individual training,” Mbuyamba said in a statement. “I will be working on my return to FC Volendam in the near future, and rest assured, I will still be on the field with the team this season.”

The disorders came to light during a medical examination prior to this season. Extensive research followed and that is why the defender only played seven times this season, most recently on January 14 of this year against Almere City FC.

Last season, the former MVV player and former youth player of FC Barcelona and Chelsea was a key player for the Volendam team, with 28 starting places and five goals in the Premier League. He also wore the captain’s armband a number of times this season.

“You might be wondering how I felt?” Mbuyamba says. “Of course there were initial concerns, as many would have about their health. However, I always believed that this would not be a problem or obstacle to my football career. I am a winner and a fighter!”

FC Volendam expects to welcome Mbuyamba back to the training field in the short term. Next Friday’s match in Rotterdam against Excelsior, a crucial match in the fight against relegation for Volendam, certainly comes too early.
