Nowitzki is interested in this job

Dirk Nowitzki ended his career as a professional basketball player in 2019. In a podcast, the German NBA legend talks about what might appeal to him in the future – and what might not.

Will we see Dirk Nowitzki on the sidelines as a coach in the future? The German NBA legend spoke about this in the 41Campus podcast and gave a clear trend.

“You should always leave the door open a little bit, but I don’t see myself as a team coach at all,” said Nowitzki, clearly rejecting a possible coaching job. The 45-year-old doesn’t see himself giving motivational speeches to the team every day, taking care of every little thing and making important decisions for an entire franchise. “I don’t think it’s for me,” said the former professional basketball player.

In 2019, he ended his career after 21 years with the Dallas Mavericks. During this time, he won a championship with the Texas franchise and became an absolute legend – not just with the Mavs, but in the entire NBA.

Nowitzki: “That could interest me”

Always at Nowitzki’s side throughout his long NBA career was his discoverer, mentor and personal trainer Holger Geschwindner. He used unusual methods to get Nowitzki into shape. The special thing: The ball was almost always with us during fitness training. Together they also developed the “Flamingo Shot”, Nowitzki’s trademark. Geschwindner used the computer to calculate how Nowitzki should best throw the ball.

Nowitzki, on the other hand, can already imagine a role as an individual trainer, similar to his mentor Geschwindner: “What would interest me is what Holger did for me. I’ve always said that. A bit of skills development, personal coach and shooting coach, that could interest me.”

The now 45-year-old’s star rose on March 29, 1998 at the Nike Koop Summit in San Antonio. Back then, the tall blonde from Würzburg made the top talents from the USA look quite old and catapulted himself into the lottery of the NBA draft with his performance of 33 points and 14 rebounds. That year, Nowitzki was selected 9th overall by the Milwaukee Bucks and traded directly to the Mavericks. After retiring, he entered the Hall of Fame in 2023.
