Remembering Silvio Di Francia: The First Memorial and Judo Competition

The first memorial dedicated to Silvio Di Francia: because it has already been a year since Silvio has been gone and it is a great void for many. A kind fighter, a true judoka (in his youth he was three times Italian champion) and then a politician (always respecting his opponent). A man of culture, who has always been on the front line throughout the history of Rome: as a radio journalist, as a convinced ecologist as a Green. Then for thirteen years as a councilor in the Campidoglio in the Rutelli era and as councilor for culture with mayor Veltroni, and again as president of Zètema. While in the last phase of his life he was councilor for Culture of Latina in the Coletta council: a role he held passionately, with the constant aim of finding initiatives to promote a beautiful land, also together with his friend, the writer Antonio Pennacchi.

A year after his death (he was 69 years old), due to an illness that gradually took away his speech (the thing that Silvio loved most), this memorial arrives which celebrates Di Francia’s roots: judo, the world that ‘he trained since he was a boy and that’s where it all started. The initiative will take place today starting from 9am at the PalaTiziano in Piazza Apollodoro and is promoted by the Asd Judo Preneste company in collaboration with Fijlkam and Roma Capitale: it is an invitational judo competition reserved for children and teenagers classes, both female how masculine.

In addition to the memorial, the organizers also created the first Di Francia prize to remember Silvio as a man of culture and sport together.

The competition is reserved for girls and boys who will participate in today’s sporting competition. These were asked to present a paper to choose between the two themes proposed by a special commission: in short, how judo teaches one to improve oneself. The Culture prize, a 500 euro voucher, will be given to the class attended by the winners.

Here are the themes: “Describe with a short thought and illustrate with a drawing what you like about judo”. And then, “It is not important to be better than someone else, but to be better than yesterday”: quote from Kano Jigoro, founder of judo. A philosophy that Silvio Di Francia has embraced throughout his life.
