There will be new champions in the Liepāja floorball championship!
When the current “Whirlwind” cup owners “BEL CIBO/MBR” stumbled in the semi-finals, it became clear during the past holidays that new champions will be crowned at the Liepaja floorball championship. “Tornado Titans/CF Liepāja” and “FK Kurši FSS” will meet in the final and fight for the main trophy.
Last Sunday, the return matches of the semi-finals of the Liepāja floorball championship took place in LOC Arena. In the first part of the day, the small semi-finals were held in the fight for the 5th place, but in the continuation, the finalists of this season were determined in intense battles.
The first finalists were determined in the duel between “Dunalkas” and “Tornado Titans/CF Liepāja”. In the first head-to-head fight Titans were superior with 6:2 and Dunalc players needed a victory in the return match. The beginning of the return match was promising and after 20 minutes the scoreboard announced a 2:2 draw. In the continuation, the top scorers of the regular tournament, Edžus Bunka and Mihails Kostusev, demonstrated high pilotage, leading their team with 5:2. Kris Kropštal’s goal brought “Dunalka” closer to 3:5, but the opponents responded sharply and were able to settle for a convincing victory with 10:4, becoming the first finalists. Meanwhile, for Dunalka after the silver medals this year – the battle for bronze.
In the second semi-final pair, “FK Kurši FSS” celebrated the victory in the first match with 4:2 and put the 2023 champions “BEL CIBO/MBR” on the edge of the cliff. Andrejs Jakushins opened the second leg with a goal, but Emils Ronis equalized the score after just a minute. Both teams stood out with good goalscoring opportunities, however Stender’s and Griezīš’s goals allowed “FK Kurši FSS” to take the lead with 3:1. Just seven seconds before the break, Armands Gulbis beat the goalkeeper of “BEL CIBO/MBR” one on one, making it 4:1. In the last seconds of the first half, the already mentioned Yakushin was sent off for pushing, but expressing his dissatisfaction, he also earned a red card. After the break, the floorball sports school team was unable to take advantage of any opportunities that arose during the six-minute numerical majority and the chase began. The champions showed character to level the score at 4-4 in the final five minutes, but it wasn’t enough. “FK Kursi FSS” was superior in two games and earned a place in the grand final.
Before the semi-finals, two small semi-final fights for 5th place were also held, where the best were determined in one match. In the first of them, “Priekule” defeated “Kuršu parents” for the third time this season. In the course of the match, Priekulians took the lead with 4:0, but Parents played back two goals and created intrigue at the end of the game. True, Jānis Vilkaveckis scoring the team’s 5th goal removed any questions from the agenda, allowing them to triumph in the small semi-final. In the 2nd final stage of the championship, “Priekule” will fight for 5th place, and “Kuršu vesti” – for 7th place.
The second small semi-final was also not without intrigue. Three goals scored by Oskar Terliņš allowed “Kings of Liepāja” to take a 5-1 lead during the game, however “Aver/Liels Auto” showed incredible fighting spirit and equalized 5-5 in the 38th minute of the game. Less than 90 seconds before the final siren of the match, Andris Gulbis restored the lead For kings. After a gross violation, “Aver/Liels Auto” received a 4-minute suspension, during which “Kings of Liepāja” scored another goal, celebrating the victory with 7:5. As in the second small semi-final, the winners of the fight will fight for the 5th place in the Final stage, while the losers must share the fate of the 7th place in the final match.
In the Liepāja floorball championship, the medal fights will also take place as a result of two games. The first Final Stage will take place on April 1, but all eight teams will play the final games of this season in the 2nd Final Stage – on April 6.
