Weighed down by a psoas injury since January, Rafael Nadal will make his comeback during the Brisbane tournament. The Spaniard’s return is highly anticipated and he still stands as an example of success. While French tennis has been in crisis for several years, Guy Forget has revealed the key to the Majorcan’s success.

It’s no secret that French tennis is doing very badly. Last season again, no Frenchman managed to really shine. As a reminder, the last success of a Habs in a Grand Slam dates back to… 1983. That year, Yannick Noah easily dominated the Swede Mats Wilander to offer yourself Roland-Garros. But since then, there has been nothing left to eat.

“Nadal, Federer or Serena Williams were born champions”

In an interview with Tennis Actu, Guy Forgetformer director of Roland-Garros, tried to explain that the influence and responsibility of the Federations in the success or failure of its players were, according to him, overestimated. For this, he notably used the example of the returning Rafael Nadal, winner of 22 Grand Slams. “Nadal, Federer or Serena Williams were born champions or they were smart enough to surround themselves with people who accompanied them throughout this journey. But it is not because Spanish tennis set up an Academy in the south of Spain and the players went jogging or did baskets, forehands and backhand topspins that they won Roland‐ Garros.”

“Nadal, it’s Pelé, it’s Picasso, it’s Mozart”

He continues: “It would once again be an insult to this extraordinary player that is Rafael Nadal. Nadal, it’s Pelé, it’s Picasso, it’s Mozart. This is the type of individual whose DNA is extraordinary. And that cannot be made.”
