Mario Balotelli has been known as a “scandal professional” for years and always manages to storm the headlines. When his club Adana Demirspor met Konyaspor (3-0) in the Turkish first league, Demirspor was awarded a penalty shortly before the end of the game – a great surprise for the Italian.
Both Balotelli and teammate M’Baye Niang wanted to compete. Instead of listening to a coach’s decision, the two decided on the shooter among themselves – in a rather unconventional way: via a “Schnick-Schnack-Schnuck” decision.
Niang won the duel – and then converted the penalty. Curiously, the first person to congratulate was Balotelli himself, who acknowledged the event with a broad grin because of his sporting success.
The Balotelli action was reminiscent of an FC Bayern scene from the past. A few years ago, Toni Kroos and Franck Ribéry drew attention to themselves with the same action during Bayern’s 6-0 victory over Hertha BSC Berlin.
In the aftermath, however, this caused considerable headwind and the Kroos/Ribéry duo faced accusations such as “an attack of arrogance” in the headlines.
