PREMATCH

ATLANTA – Desmond Ridder of the Atlanta Falcons and Sam Howell of the Washington Commanders are coming off their best career aerial game and will face each other on Sunday in a duel between two second-year quarterbacks.

The Commanders (2-3) will try to end a three-game losing streak. They have allowed 33 points or more in their last four games, including a 40-20 loss last week in front of their fans.

The poor defensive performance overshadowed Howell’s career highs of 37 completions and 388 yards.

Ridder, for his part, had his first 300-yard game, also setting career highs of 28 catches and 329 yards in a 21-19 victory over the Houston Texans. Ridder got a touchdown pass and ran for another major, before being the architect of the final offensive sequence that led to Younghoe Koo’s decisive 37-yard field goal.

Ridder was forgiven a week after being the victim of three turnovers in a defeat at the hands of the Jacksonville Jaguars. This performance then raised questions about his future as starting quarterback.

The Falcons (3-2) have an opportunity to be two games above .500 for the first time since 2017, their last campaign with a winning record.

Ridder said his offensive line’s effective protection has put it in a good position to thrive against the Texans and will once again be key against the Commanders’ aggressive defense, led by Montez Sweat.

The center had 16 sacks in the first four games of the season, but was not tackled once behind the line of scrimmage against the Texans.

“First of all, with everything we do, it starts at the front,” Ridder said Wednesday. The players gave me plenty of time to settle in, make my reads and throw the ball. The challenge this week is [d’affronter leur ligne défensive], they have some good players to put pressure on the quarterbacks. »

The Commanders offense was one-dimensional against the Bears. She opted for passing plays in the last 55 handoffs.

“Obviously, I think we’ve been in situations where we fell behind more than we would have liked,” Howell explained. We have to do a better job of getting good starts and not putting ourselves in those situations. »
