Stan Wawrinka (ATP 88) has to admit defeat to Novak Djokovic (ATP 2) in the 3rd round of Wimbledon 3: 6, 1: 6, 6: 7 (5: 7). The Swiss can hold his own against an impressive Serb didn’t get a single break chance, but still comes close to winning the 3rd set. Djokovic continues in the round of 16 against Hubert Hurkacz (POL / ATP 18).
For 75 minutes, Stan Wawrinka could do whatever he wanted – there was no herb against Novak Djokovic. The Serb played so concentrated, so precise and so calm that one of the Swiss, who showed quite good approaches, could almost feel sorry for him on the sacred pitch.
3: 6, 1: 6 – after the first two rounds, everything indicated that the game could easily be brought to an end before 11 p.m. local time.
Wawrinka close to winning the set
But with an increase in performance – especially thanks to an improved serve – Wawrinka almost made sure that the decision had to be postponed to Saturday due to the London curfew. The 38-year-old fought his way into the tie-break in the 3rd set and took a 5-3 lead after being 3-1 down.
However, Djokovic did not let himself be disturbed, waited for his chance and turned the tables. With 4 points in a row, the Grand Slam record winner still secured the three-set success.
Djokovic too solid
The start of the game was complicated for Wawrinka. In his first service game, the Lausanne native was confronted with a 0:40, but was able to prevent the early break.
However, when the score was 2:3, Wawrinka was no longer able to get out of trouble. The long rallies went almost exclusively to Djokovic, although the Swiss was able to keep up in the rallies.
In the second set, Wawrinka had nothing to order. The three-time major champion was broken right at the start. Wawrinka himself did not manage to pose problems for Djokovic in his service games. The Serb didn’t allow a single break chance in the entire match.
Round of 16 against Hurkacz
While Wawrinka’s thoroughly enjoyable Wimbledon performance comes to an end, Djokovic continues on Sunday. On Middle Sunday, Hubert Hurkacz stands in the way of the big tournament favorite. The 7-time Wimbledon champion has won all 5 direct duels against the Pole.
