The Return of the Archery Tournament: Torneo de le 8 porte in the Historic Village of Gandino

A real archery competition, disputed between the squares and buildings of the historic village of Gandino with new Robin Hoods dressed in medieval costumes. After the forced break due to the pandemic (which forced the cancellation of the 2020 edition), the Compagnia Arcieri Valgandino proposes the “Torneo de le 8 porte” on Saturday 24 June, in collaboration with the Municipality, Pro Loco and the “La Spinata” restaurant. Archers, ladies and pages (the youngest), divided into teams of Guelphs and Ghibellines, will face each other with historic bows and in ancient-style costumes, after the procession along the central streets which at 4.45 pm will open the event from Piazza Vittorio Veneto towards the churchyard of the Basilica and along the ancient via Mirandola, accompanied by the sound of drums and bagpipes.

The first shooting sessions, in the ten different emplacements set up in the town, will begin at 5pm. At 7pm there will be a useful break to propose the Medieval Dinner under the arcades of the Town Hall, with a soup prepared according to an ancient local recipe, served in loaves purposely baked. From 20.30 second shooting session in the various pitches. The public will be able to discover courtyards and suggestive corners of the buildings until nightfall, normally closed to the public, or get passionate about the final test of the “Three Axes”, a sort of barrage with precision shooting around the fountain.

“The event – confirms Massimo Rottigni who coordinates the event – took place for the first time in 2009. It combines the competitive aspect with a historical setting with attention to every detail, favored by the historic center of Gandino, once closed by the fourteenth-century walls which had 8 access doors, hence the name of the Tournament. At an organizational level it is an important effort, supported in particular by the Gruppo Storico Arcieri Valgandino, which with this initiative also wants to remember the friends who have sadly left us in recent years. A grateful and moved thought will go to the memory of Floriano Pezzoli, Antonio Gelmi, Bruno Pezzoli, Paolo Imberti, Marcello Gallizioli and Agostino Zenoni. The Medieval Dinner under the arcades is reserved for competing archers, those wishing to participate (dinning in the nearby restaurant) can contact the La Spinata Restaurant (035.727371).
