Sebastian Ofner is in the semi-finals of the British Challenger tournament in Ilkey.
The 27-year-old defeated the American Denis Kudla 6-2, 6-2 in the Wimbledon grass preparation event on Thursday. In the semifinals, Ofner now meets Zsombor Piros from Hungary.
The Styrian moves up in the world rankings for the first time in the top 80, possibly in the top 75. Austria’s current number one was number 3 in the quarter-finals, the highest ranked player still in the competition.
Reaching the final would put Ofner in the top 70, and winning this tournament, worth 145,000 euros, would even put him in the top 60.
Meanwhile, Gerald Melzer from Lower Austria also reached the quarter-finals at least once in a Challenger in Cali, Colombia, which was endowed with 80,000 dollars.
