Wieffer: ”Good thing he didn’t go outside”

With a sigh of relief, midfielder Mats Wieffer starts the interview with ESPN
after the difficult victory over FC Groningen. De Tukker himself was the first to realize that the performance of the team from Rotterdam left something to be desired. In conversation with Hans Kraay junior, he tells his version of the competition.

Wieffer starts with a clear conclusion: ”It was not good. We can talk about that for a long time. Even when they had to continue with ten men, we played the ball outside too often. But we’ll shoot him in the end anyway.”

As the game progressed, many people will increasingly have doubts about a good outcome. Still, the players held out hope. “We didn’t have many great chances. Danilo had a shot at one point and we gave a lot of crosses. We keep putting pressure on and creating chances, then he can go in one time.”

Idrissi’s goal proved decisive. “These are the best balls, he presents them in such a way that if no one touches them, the ball will still go in. He was very important,” said Wieffer. Hans Kraay responds by saying that the supporters advised him to go outside. Good thing he didn’t go outside in this case. He gives a lot of good crosses, that creates a lot of threat.”

Wieffer ended the encounter as central defender. The midfielder appears to be quite multifunctional. “I was also in the back last season, that went well. I can possibly play there.” Kraay sees this multifunctionality as a reason for Ronald Koeman to keep him in the selection of the Dutch national team. Wieffer responds as follows: ”I am very happy with it. Someone who had said 2 months ago that I would be there would have thought everyone crazy.”
