SEuropean uneven bars champion Elisabeth Seitz narrowly missed out on a medal on her flagship device at the World Gymnastics Championships in Liverpool. As the fifth starter in the M&S Bank Arena, the woman from Stuttgart took fourth place on Saturday with 14.366 points and a D-score of 6.1. The Chinese Wei Xiaoyuan defended her title with 14.966 points in front of the American Shilese Jones (14.766) and Olympic champion Nina Derwael from Belgium (14.70).
Seitz had already stated in advance that after her bronze medal at the 2018 World Championships in Doha, she reckoned there were few chances of further precious metal this time. After a coronavirus infection in September, the gold medalist at the European Championships in Munich in the summer was just in time to strengthen the ranks of the German Gymnastics Association (DTB) in the British port city.
Eighth in the prelim, the national record champion only just made it into the decision of the best bar gymnasts. There she managed her freestyle without any problems and completed it in a safe position. But the medal winners had more difficult programs to offer.
There had previously been a US double success on vault by the two team world champions Jade Carey (14.516) and Jordan Chiles (14.35).
In the men’s race, Briton Giarnni Regini-Moran secured his first World Championship title with 14.533 points on floor. Former European champion Rhys McClenaghan from Ireland kept the upper hand on the pommel horse with 15.30 points.
