Malagasy Judoka Laura Rasoanaivo-Razafy Claims Bronze at African Championship 2024

Laura Rasoanaivo-Razafy, crowned African champion of 2023, failed to defend her title this year in Egypt, finishing on the 3rd step of the podium, synonymous with a bronze medal in the under 70 kg category, at the Senior African Judo Championship, in Cairo.

Despite her intensive preparation, Laura Rasoanaivo-Razafy was far from her goal of repeating her feat from last year. From the start, she lost to Moroccan Sofia Belattar, before winning two consecutive victories, allowing her to win the bronze medal.
“This medal is equivalent to 350 points in his race for Olympic qualification. In total, she accumulated 1,417 points allowing her to have a good ranking at the continental level for the Paris Olympics. This ranking will evolve further after his participation in the Grand Slam of Dushambe, Tajikistan in a week and the World Championships in Abu Dhabi in 3 weeks,” underlines the Malagasy Judo Federation (FMJ).
Christiane Vital, another Malagasy competitor, was not as successful in the under 52 kg category. After a defeat against Moroccan Chaimae Eddinari, she did not have the opportunity to catch up during the repechage. In the medal rankings, the Malagasy delegation finished in 12th place.

Homecoming
The clashes between Laura Rasoanaivo-Razafy and Cameroonian Zita Biami were a highlight of the championship. The judokate remains invincible for the fifth consecutive time (Luanda Open 2023, Niamey Open 2023, African Championship 2023, African Games 2024 and African Championship 2024). Olga Bento also suffered the superiority of the Malagasy judokate twice on the continental scene (Luanda Open in 2023 and African Championship 2024).
