Which country did badminton originate from? Where did badminton first originate?

Everyone loves badminton so much, so do you know its origin?

1. Originated in Japan

According to legend, badminton first appeared in Japan in the 14th and 15th centuries. The racket was made of wood, and the ball was made of cherry pits inserted with feathers. Because the ball holder is a cherry pit, it is too heavy, and the ball flies too fast, which makes the feathers of the ball extremely easy to damage, and the cost of the ball is too high, so the sport gradually disappeared after a while.

2. Appeared in India

Around the 18th century, a game very similar to the early Japanese badminton appeared in Puna, India. The ball was made of circular cardboard with a diameter of about 6 cm, and a badminton was inserted in the middle (similar to the shuttlecock in our country). It is made of wood. The game is played by two people standing opposite each other and hitting the ball back and forth with a wooden board in hand.

3. Born in England

Modern badminton was born in England, around 1800, derived from tennis. We can notice that today’s badminton courts and tennis courts are still very similar. In 1870, balls made of feathers and cork and rackets with strings appeared. In 1873, the Duke of Beaufort performed a badminton game at his estate in Bloomington, County Glasgow. Since then, badminton has gradually developed, “Badminton” has become the name of badminton, and the English writing is “Badminton”. At that time, the event venue was in the shape of a gourd, wide at both ends and narrow in the middle, with a net hanging at the narrow part. It was not until 1901 that it was changed to a rectangle.

In 1875, the world’s first badminton game rules appeared in Pune, India. Three years later, the United Kingdom designated more complete and unified rules, many of which have not changed much at that time. In 1893, the world’s earliest badminton association, the British Badminton Association, was established, and in 1899 the All England Badminton Championship was held.

In 1934, the International Badminton Federation was launched by Canada, Denmark, the United Kingdom, France, Ireland, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Scotland and Wales, with its headquarters in London. Since then, international badminton competitions have increased day by day.

From 1934 to 1947, European and American players from Denmark, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada dominated the international badminton world.

In the first World Men’s Badminton Team Championship held in 1948-1949 – “Thomas Cup”, the Malayan team won the championship, thus ushering in the era of Asian domination of the international badminton. In the 11 Thomas Cups between 1948 and 1979, the Indonesian team won 7 championships and the Malaysian team won 4 championships. Complete victory over the Nordic countries, known as the “uncrowned king” (because my country did not join the International Badminton Federation at that time, can not participate in world championships).

The World Women’s Badminton Team Championship – “Uber Cup” was held in 1956, and the first three championships were won by Americans. From the late 1960s onwards, the advantage shifted to Asia, where teams from Japan and Indonesia swept the championship and runner-up in previous competitions.

Since the 1970s, the Indonesian team and the Chinese team have taken the lead in men’s badminton technology. In 1982, the Chinese team participated in the Thomas Cup for the first time and won the championship. The Chinese team’s technology has been widely praised by the world badminton. In the late 1970s, Japan, South Korea, Pakistan, Thailand, Malaysia and other countries and regions also made great progress in badminton technology and achieved good results in international competitions. Denmark, Britain, Sweden and other countries in Europe have extensively absorbed the technology and experience of Asians on the basis of exerting their original characteristics, and their technical level has been steadily improved. In terms of women, it can be said that China, Indonesia and Japan are the top three. In 1982, the Chinese team participated in the All England Championships for the first time and won the women’s singles championship and doubles championship. In the late 1980s, the Malaysian team and the South Korean team had made great progress and won the men’s team championship and doubles championship in the International Badminton Competition for many times. In terms of women, China and Indonesia continued to lead, and the South Korean women’s team caught up and became the main opponents of the Chinese and Indonesian teams in recent years.

In February 1978, the World Badminton Federation was established in Hong Kong. In May 1981, the International Badminton Federation and the World Badminton Federation officially merged.

At present, the International Badminton Federation has more than 100 member countries. The world competitions under the jurisdiction of the International Badminton Federation are: Thomas Cup (World Men’s Team Championship), which has been held every 3 years since 1948 (since 1984, it has been held every two years); Uber Cup (World Women’s Team Championships) ), which has been held every 3 years since 1956 (since 1984, it has been held every two years); the World Championships (individual competitions) have been held since 1977. The Sudirman Cup, also known as the World Badminton Mixed Team Championship, was held in 1989 and is held every two years in odd-numbered years. The Sudirman Cup is a trophy donated by the Indonesian Badminton Association to the International Badminton Federation on behalf of its people.

The competition adopts a five-match three-best system and consists of five events: men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles. It is the most important world competition representing the overall level of badminton, and is on a par with Thomas Cup and Uber Cup.
