Argentine Grillo continues to lead the PGA Mayakoba Classic

Argentine Emiliano Grillo continues to cling to the illusion of achieving his second victory on the PGA Tour, after maintaining the lead this Saturday at the Mayakoba Golf Classic, which is played at Campo El Camaleón, in Playa del Carmen, Mexico.

Grillo signed a 68-shot round (3 under par) to take a one-shot lead over American Tom Hoge. At two impacts, Norwegian Victor Hovland is in third place, after a return of 63 strokes (8 under par).

The 28-year-old from Chaco had an encouraging start with a birdie on hole 1 and then took advantage of the two par-5s in the first leg, the 5 and 7.

“I started as a leader and continue as a leader, that was a bit of the idea for today, I hope it lasts another day. I will try to do another round under par tomorrow and see if it is enough,” said Grillo, who accumulates 19 rounds in par or better every time he visited this field designed by Greg Norman.

In any case, the Argentine had to face harassment from several players who took advantage of ideal conditions to score very low scores, such as 63 from Hovland and Adam Long or 62 from world number 3, Justin Thomas, who complete the first five positions.

At the beginning of his return trip, Grillo found his only setbacks, with bogeys at 10 and 12, although he never lost the lead. The birdie on 13 and 15 gave him a little air and finally the advantage of a shot with the that reaches the final round.

Two other Latinos are near the tip. The Chilean Joaquín Niemann, who is playing inspired by his cousin Rafita, to whom he will donate all his prize, scored a 67 (-4) and the Mexican Carlos Ortiz, who also signed a card with the same score, tied for 11th place, at six strokes of Cricket.

Another Mexican, Abraham Ancer, made up ground after a great round of 6-under-par 65 to reach 15th place.

This Sunday Emiliano Grillo will leave at 10:00 local time (+2 in Argentina) seeking his second title on the PGA TOUR. The previous one was at the Safeway Open in 2015, in the first tournament of its debut season.
