A supposedly harmless collision has now turned out to be a serious crash. Jan Olschowsky injured his left thumb in the friendly match against Halleschen FC on Wednesday (3-0) and will be out for a long time. There was “a bony injury,” Borussia said on Friday, and the 21-year-old would be out for “several weeks.”

Olschowsky’s start in the summer preparations is also in danger. After the vacation period, which started for the Gladbach pros on Thursday, the team will meet again on July 7 in Borussia Park and complete the obligatory medical checks. On July 9th the “real” training will start.

Rise to number two

The young goalkeeper is one of the very few winners in the Gladbach team. Starting the season as number four, he gradually moved up the goalkeeper rankings over the course of the season and is now the official number two, ahead of veteran Tobias Sippel.

Before the start of the season, he could hardly have dreamed that he was not only able to celebrate his first Bundesliga appearance last season, but that he even stood between the posts four times for the Foals. “If someone told me that a year ago, I would have signed it straight away. It’s really cool. But I think I worked hard for these assignments. I always gave it my all, both in the U23s and in professional training waited for my chance,” said the homegrown player from Gladbach after the game in Dortmund (2: 5) on matchday 32.

Contract runs until 2027

During the holidays, Olschowsky actually wanted to let the rapid rise and the whole development in the past few months sink in. Now he has to digest the bitter setback with the thumb injury.

Olschowsky has been with Borussia since 2009 and will continue to wear the foal jersey in the years to come. At the beginning of February, the contract was extended until the summer of 2027. Sports director Roland Virkus said at the time: “Jan has shown at the highest level, whether in the game or in training, that he is a great talent and that we can totally rely on him.”
