Werder Bremen’s Youth Revolution: Signing U17 National Player Karim Coulibaly

Werder Bremen wants to become the top address as a training club and is making another big exclamation point.

Bremen are about to sign U17 national player Karim Coulibaly (16).

The HSV hope is expected to sign a long-term contract this week, the duration of which depends on several components (e.g. number of professional appearances).

How cool is that?!You’ve never seen a parade like this!

Numerous Bundesliga clubs as well as top international clubs such as Inter Milan were interested in Coulibaly. He hasn’t turned down the Italians yet, but internally Werder is firmly expecting a change for the central defender. It would be a major coup!

Football boss Clemens Fritz told BILD: “We have been heavily criticized in the last few weeks. But we are still an attractive location for young and promising players.”

Second U-national player approaching: Werder’s jewel attack!

Werder had already signed Hertha hope Patrice Covic (16) in April. The Croatian U17 international is highly rated and signed for four years on a free transfer.

Covic and Coulibaly – two transfers that surprise. After all, Werder is not considered a club where a lot of talent is given opportunities with their own professionals.

Example: Fabio Chiarodia (18), who was only a benchwarmer at Werder as a very young professional and moved to Gladbach. However, he only has six league appearances under his belt there and was in the starting line-up against Union on Sunday.

In addition, two promising players from our own stable, Nick Woltemade (moving to Stuttgart) and Eren Dinkci, who was loaned out to Heidenheim (to Freiburg), recently announced their departure. For both, a lack of appreciation in the club and from coach Ole Werner was an issue. The accusation that there is not enough focus on young players annoys those responsible.

Fritz defends Werder: “After Freiburg, we have been the club that has generated the most money by training young players since 2021. The investor money and transfer surpluses last summer have made us more agile.”

A group of investors poured 38 million euros into the coffers. It is now clear that it has advantages in the fight for the stars of tomorrow. And coach Ole Werner should focus more on that. However, in the 3-0 win in Augsburg, two places on the bench remained vacant. It would have been an opportunity to let players from the U23 (already champions) get a taste of squad life in the Bremen League.

Werner explains why that wasn’t an issue for him: “We wanted to have the group that also heard the content during the week and didn’t want to distribute experiences. It’s about winning games – and everyone has to know what to expect.”
