Tennis professional Ons Jabeur criticized the European tournament organizers after reaching the quarter-finals in Madrid and called for more equality. “The way they treat women and men here is completely different,” said the Tunisian on Monday.

Women would not have the same access to training facilities as men, and WTA games would not be shown on television as often as ATP matches. “Here in Spain I would like to go to the hotel, turn on the TV and watch a woman’s tennis match,” said Jabeur. But she wasn’t able to look at one “not once.”

It was “really frustrating to see that,” said the 2022 tournament winner, who eliminated Jelena Ostapenko (Latvia/No. 9) 6-0, 6-4 in the round of 16. This is no way to inspire young girls.

Jabeur said she felt “that we still have a long way to go, especially here in Madrid and in Rome, in Europe in general.” “I feel like they need to respect women more.”
