Tight end Rob Gronkowski has announced his retirement from NFL football for a second time.
“I want to thank the first class Buccaneers organization for an amazing journey and for believing in me to come back to play to build a champion team. So I go back to my retirement home, walking away from football with my head held high knowing that I gave it my all, whether good or less, every time I was on the pitch,” Gronkowski commented in a Twitter post.
He retired from football in 2019 and later returned to play with his former New England Patriots teammate Tom Brady, but this time with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Adam Schefter de ESPN received these comments from Gronkowski’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, suggesting that a return to play may not be out of the question.
“It wouldn’t surprise me if Tom Bray calls during the season for a comeback and Rob answers that call. It’s just my opinion, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see Rob return to the game this season or next season,” his agent shared to ESPN.
The 33-year-old Gronk ends his career with four Super Bowl titles.
The Pats’ second-round pick in 2010, Gronk spent the first nine seasons of his career with the organization, winning three Super Bowls.
After a season on the sidelines in 2019, he returned to action in 2020 with the Buccaneers to add another trophy to his collection.
In 143 games, he had 9,286 yards and 92 touchdowns. Last season with the Bucs, he recorded six touchdowns and 802 yards in 12 games.
