Nage no kata: A Fusion of Kata and Contemporary Music

Yann Robin, composer and judoka, imagined “Nage no kata”, a new show combining kata and contemporary music hosted by the Maison de la Culture et du Japon in Paris. Five composers each wrote an original musical work for a soloist from the Multilateral ensemble, imagined around a fundamental kata. The Japanese Noriko Baba and Misato Mochizuki respectively worked on Gonosen no kata and Nage no kata, while the French Yves Chauris, Aurélien Dumont and Yann Robin were inspired by Kime no kata, Goshin Jutsu and Katame no kata. Each kata will be performed by black belt judokas Stephen Roulin and Antoine Bidault, and directed by Ludovic Lagarde.

Two performances will take place on Friday May 31 at 8 p.m., and Saturday June 1 at 4 p.m., at the Maison de la Culture et du Japon. The show will also be performed at the Nice Classic Live Festival on July 18, and at the Manoir de Jaugette in Obterre on July 20. A project certified by Paris 2024 not to be missed a few weeks before the start of the Games.
