Chongzhou Sanjiang Middle School’s judo team secured one gold, one silver, and six bronze medals at the 2026 Chengdu Youth Judo Championships in Xinjin District. Competing against more than 30 teams and 300 youth athletes from across the city, the squad finished with these medalists alongside six additional athletes placing fourth through eighth in their respective divisions.
Debut at the City Championships
The tournament ran from October 30 to 31, 2026, marking the first time Sanjiang Middle School fielded a delegation at the municipal level. The event was hosted by the Chengdu Sports Bureau and the Chengdu Education Bureau. Despite shorter training cycles and limited prior tournament exposure compared to established municipal rivals, the Sanjiang athletes relied on technical execution developed during daily practice sessions to secure podium finishes.
Coaching and Institutional Development
Team coach Wang Yan guided the delegation through the competition. Wang is a national first-grade judo athlete, a national first-grade Chinese style wrestling athlete, a national-level referee, and placed fifth nationally in Chinese style wrestling at the 14th National Games of the People’s Republic of China in 2021. Her transition from competitive sports to the educational sector informed the team’s tactical drilling and foundational throw mechanics.
School administrators attributed the results to a regional collaborative development model initiated two years ago. By partnering with Chongzhou Sanjiang Primary School, the institutions implemented a vertical training pipeline that introduces judo fundamentals during elementary education. This continuity allows incoming middle school students to build technical awareness ahead of municipal competition.
Core Principles and Next Steps
Training regimens integrate the traditional judo philosophy of “maximum efficiency, mutual welfare,” utilizing leverage and redirection during live sparring. School officials stated that the curriculum emphasizes discipline, etiquette, and resilience, using competitive grappling to reinforce character development alongside athletic conditioning.
Following the October tournament, the school plans to maintain the collaborative primary-secondary training framework as part of broader sports-education integration initiatives.
