The Arizona Cardinals will move forward with Gardner Minshew II as their starting quarterback, head coach Mike LaFleur announced on Monday. The decision marks a shift in the team’s rotation, as Jacoby Brissett—who was the starter in all the games of the season—moves to the role of third quarterback.
Minshew’s promotion after the Dallas Cowboys comeback
The change follows Minshew’s performance in Sunday’s 33-30 overtime victory against the Dallas Cowboys. Brissett completed 10 of 23 passes for 119 yards and had been sacked in four occasions before Minshew substituted him when there was 1:35 remaining in the third quarter. Upon entering, Minshew completed 17 of 23 passes for 188 yards and three touchdowns, leading the offense to scores on each of the four offensive series he directed during regulation before orchestrating the decisive offensive series in overtime, which ended with a 42-yard field goal by Chad Ryland.
LaFleur’s coaching decision for the Seattle Seahawks matchup
LaFleur described the move as a choice based on his instinct, considering that the team “needed a spark.” He emphasized that the decision to relegate Brissett was not simple, noting the human element involved. “It’s not a pleasant phone call,” LaFleur said. “Obviously, there is no manual for this. There is a human factor. I have a great deal of respect for Jacoby, both as a person and as a player.” He added that the responsibility did not rest solely on Brissett; it was something collective, starting from the coach himself.

Regarding his assessment of Minshew’s preparation, LaFleur noted that the performance was not a surprise. “He proved to all of us what a competitor he is,” the coach said. “He is a natural competitor and is always prepared; he trains as if he were the starter, ready to enter on any play.”
Carson Beck’s role as the new backup
With Minshew taking the position, rookie Carson Beck will become the backup to Minshew, moving up from his role as the third emergency quarterback. LaFleur stated that this change will favor Beck’s development, as he will be able to perform repetitions with the training team.
Beck has remained inactive for the eight games disputed this season and recently dealt with back spasms, though LaFleur confirmed the rookie feels “very good” at this moment. Despite his back discomfort and having had few repetitions in the training sessions, the coach expressed confidence in Beck. “I know he masters the game plan and the system to perfection,” LaFleur said. “It’s no secret: if something were to happen, it’s good to know what we have.”
Team preparation for the upcoming schedule
LaFleur confirmed he spoke with players who are not quarterbacks before making public the announcement on Monday to prevent the news from taking them by surprise. The Cardinals are now adjusting their preparations with Minshew at the helm as they look ahead to their next matchup against the Seattle Seahawks this Sunday.
