Salerno Airport handles 3,500 passengers in 48 hours during Capodichino closure
Salerno-Costa d’Amalfi Airport processed approximately 3,500 passengers across 35 flights in a 48-hour period during the temporary closure of Naples Capodichino Airport, handling 19 flights on Sunday and 16 flights on Monday, according to local transport reports.
Operations and Ground Logistics
The sudden influx tested local infrastructure, which managed an average of roughly 1,500 travelers per day. Ground operations experienced minor congestion caused by adverse weather conditions, though flight operations continued without formal interruption. Parking capacity met demand after authorities opened an additional lot located behind the local fire brigade barracks.
Gianluca Petrone, head of the air transport department for the CGIL labor union, noted that the initial test demonstrated the facility’s viability. “The organizational machinery worked,” Petrone stated regarding the temporary rerouting of flights. “Some criticality occurred, especially due to bad weather. Considering that it was the first day, the result is positive.”
Intermodal Transport and Special Delegations
Busitalia services transported nearly a thousand arriving passengers directly from Salerno to Naples on Sunday alone, managing the intermodal transfer without significant delays. Passenger processing also accommodated high-profile travelers, including the French Under-23 judo delegation, who used the Salerno terminal to return to Paris after winning gold medals at the continental competition hosted in Naples.
Carmen Morra, general secretary of Filt CGIL Salerno, emphasized the broader implications for regional transport infrastructure. “We have supported this project from the beginning, even when there was no lack of doubts and perplexities, convinced that Salerno could and should assume a strategic role in the Campania airport system,” Morra said. She also praised Gesac workers for managing the heightened operational pressure with professionalism and responsibility.
Monthly Traffic Projections and Future Schedule
The temporary traffic shift positions November to potentially surpass the passenger totals recorded in September, when Assaeroporti data logged approximately 26mila total travelers for the entire month. Iberian routes alongside regular connections to London and Paris performed consistently during the test window, while long-haul interest remained active for destinations including Sharm el-Sheikh and Dubai.
Operations at Salerno-Costa d’Amalfi Airport return to standard scheduled parameters following the reopening of Naples Capodichino, while local transport authorities evaluate the intermodal data gathered during the two-day surge.
