A nasty surprise the day before the Games started. The showers in 70 rooms in the village which hosts the Olympic teams in Milan were sabotaged before the start of the events, the organizing committee for the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina said on Thursday. The shower drain pipe was pierced with a mechanical tool after the end of the work, between December 2025 and January 2026, in three buildings of the brand new Olympic village, according to the Games committee, which start on Friday.
The damage to the rooms was discovered during tests of the hydraulic installations, when a water leak was detected in the ceiling of a ground floor. Access to the Olympic Village was however reserved, in theory, for workers with a personalized badge, under the surveillance of a private security company.
An investigation was opened by Digos, the Italian police department responsible for the fight against terrorism, and the anti-terrorism unit of the Milan public prosecutor’s office, according to the Italian press.
