Three Creole boxers go to the Paris Olympic qualifiers

SANTO DOMINGO. Starting this Friday, May 24, the national boxing team will seek to increase its representation at the Paris Olympic Games, with the presentation of three fighters in the last qualifier of that discipline that will take place in Bangkok, Thailand.

The three Creoles who are in Bangkok and who will enter the ring today are José De los Santos, in the 57 kilograms (kg), who will face Amadu Amadu Mohammed, from Ghana.

Also Johnny Fernández (71 kg) who will collide with Damián Durkacz, from Poland.

And the star Estefany Almánzar who will have to fight in her first match against Sandra Dramik, from Poland.

Boxing already has two qualified fighters, María Moronta Hernández, who on this occasion became the first female athlete to qualify for the Olympic Games in two consecutive versions by getting her ticket to Paris 2024, in the tournament that was held in Italy.

The first to qualify was Yunior Alcántara, who obtained his ticket at the last Pan American Games that took place in Santiago, Chile.

The Thailand tournament is the last boxing qualifier for Paris 2024.

The three Dominicans, De los Santos, Rodriguez and Almanzar, will try to advance for the maximum sporting competition that will take place from Friday, July 26 to Sunday, August 11 of this year in Paris.

In Thailand, 579 athletes from 133 countries will be competing to qualify in boxing and there are only 51 places to enjoy, so the judges’ decisions will be key, since there is no review.

Mr. Rubén García, president of the Dominican Amateur Boxing Federation (Fedoboxa) said he felt optimistic about the work that Dominican boxers could do in Thailand, but recalled how difficult it is when it depends on decisions where so many athletes and such a large number of countries.

He indicated that alongside the athletes is the technical director of the discipline, Professor Armando Hernández.
