FORMULA 1 | Adrian Newey leaves Red Bull after 19 years

Adrian Newey, the renowned Formula 1 designer, has ended its long association with Red Bull Racing, releasing early from his contract that expired in 2025 although he will be linked to the red bull brand until the first quarter of 2025.

It is speculated that his decision was motivated by internal tensions in the team, exacerbated by allegations of inappropriate conduct against team manager Christian Horner, as well as internal power struggles between Horner y Helmut Marko.

‘La Gazzeta’ points out that the news of Newey’s departure has left Red Bull weakened, since he was considered the team’s technical reference point, having designed the cars that took Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen to multiple world titles. And the same Italian media points out that his destiny would be at Ferrari, however, his departure opens the door to a new challenge with Ferrari, where he is expected to join the team starting next season. Thus ruling out the option of Aston Martin to lead the car of the regulation change in which Fernando Alonso would be riding.

The key to the operation is the trip that the director of the Italian team, Fred Vasseur went to London instead of traveling to Miami with the rest of the team to face the operation. It must be remembered that Newey would have free rein to work with the 2026 car, but not the 2025 car, which would have limitations due to having changed teams.

This is the statement that the team has issued to dismiss Newey as head of engineering at Red Bull:

Oracle Red Bull Racing announces today that technical director Adrian Newey will leave Red Bull Technology Group in the first quarter of 2025. The engineering chief will leave his Formula One design duties to focus on the final development and delivery of Red’s first hypercar Bull. the long-awaited RB17. He will remain involved and committed to this exciting project until its completion.

Since joining Red Bull Racing in 2006, Adrian’s vision and technical leadership have been instrumental in leading the team and group to seven notable titles. of F1 drivers’ championship and six constructors’ championship, with a total of 118 victories and 101 pole positions, including the 2008 STR pole and victory.

Oracle Red Bull Racing technical director Adrian Newey said: “Ever since I was a kid, I wanted to be a fast car designer. My dream was to be an engineer in Formula One and I have been lucky enough to make it come true. For almost two decades, it has been my great honor to have played a key role in Red Bull Racing’s progress from a newcomer to a multi-title winning team. However, I feel that now is an opportune time to pass that baton on to others and seek new challenges for myself. In the meantime, the final stages of development of RB17 are upon us, so for the rest of my time with the team my focus will be on that. I would like to thank the many incredible people I have worked with at Red Bull during our journey over the past 18 years for their talent, dedication and hard work. It has been a real privilege and I am sure that the engineering team is well prepared for the work leading up to the final evolution of the car during the four-year period established by these regulations. On a personal note, I would also like to thank the shareholders, to the late Dietrich Mateschitz, Mark Mateschitz and Chalerm Yoovidhya for their unwavering support during my time at Red Bull, and to Christian, who has not only been my business partner but also a friend. of our respective families. Also, thanks to Oliver Mintzlaff for his direction and to Eddie Jordan, my close friend and manager.”

Christian Horner, Oracle Red Bull Racing team principal and CEO, said: “All of our greatest moments of the last 20 years have come with Adrian’s hand at the technical helm. His vision and brilliance have helped us win 13 titles in 20 seasons. His exceptional ability to conceptualize beyond F1 and provide broader inspiration for grand prix car design, his remarkable talent for embracing change and finding the most rewarding areas of the rules to focus on, and his relentless will to win have helped Red Bull. Rushing to become a force greater than I think even the late Dietrich Mateschitz could have imagined. More than that, the last 19 years with Adrian have been a lot of fun. For me, when Adrian joined Red Bull, he was already a superstar designer. Two decades and 13 Championships later he leaves as a true legend. He is also my friend and someone to whom I will be eternally grateful for everything he contributed to our association. The legacy he leaves will resonate through the halls of Milton Keynes and the RB17 Track Car will be a fitting testament and legacy to his time with us.”

Adrian’s first real design for the team, the RB3, achieved a podium finish at the 2007 European Grand Prix. The following year his design achieved the Group’s first victory with Sebastian Vettel and Toro Rosso at the Italian GP. Following regulatory changes and a unique ability to capitalize on them, something that has become a hallmark of Adrian’s stellar career at Red Bull Racing, his clean-sheet RB5 design gave the team its first victory, at the Chinese Grand Prix in 2009, and five more victories. that season.

In 2010, RB6 led the team to its first double title, an achievement that was repeated in each of the following three years. The introduction of hybrid power to F1 in 2014 led to more difficult times and a first step back from Adrian’s exclusive commitment to F1 to enable the creation of the Valkyrie hypercar.

The arrival of Honda as the team’s power unit partner in 2019 rekindled its competitive spark. The RB16B claimed its first championship in eight years in 2021. An extensive rule change for the following season resulted in another clean sheet design, the RB18, leading to a new era of dominance that began in 2022 and continues through the present day.
