Celebrating Judo Excellence: Third Domingo Correa Negrín Memorial Tournament

The Plenary Hall of the City Council of San Sebastián de La Gomera hosted the presentation of the third Domingo Correa Negrín Memorial insular judo tournament. Organized by the Uchimata Club, it is celebrated on May 18 with the participation of more than 200 judokas from teams from Tenerife, Gran Canaria, La Gomera and, for the first time in the history of this tournament, from Belgium.

The Councilor for Sports of the City Council of San Sebastián de La Gomera, Aday Herrera, highlighted that the celebration of the third edition of this tournament “is a clear example of the successful trajectory of the Judo Club Uchimata and how much this sport has affected our island, registering a significant increase in the number of licenses in recent years and, above all, highlighting the care and care that the club gives to the base categories, enriching the training of the youngest and promoting friendship, through sport , of boys and girls from the different municipalities of La Gomera.”

Herrera added that it is really important to expand the range of sports disciplines on our island, “the Judo Club Uchimata has always managed to stand out significantly in the competitions in which it participates inside and outside our archipelago, and the celebration of the third edition of “This tournament gives us the opportunity to enjoy the performance of our athletes at home.”

The Sports Councilor of the Cabildo of La Gomera, Guillermo Medina, pointed out that for the island institution it is an honor to be part, once again, of the Domingo Correa Negrín Memorial, “an event that pays tribute to an outstanding figure in the world of judo and that promotes the values ​​of this sport on our island. This tournament is an opportunity to promote sportsmanship and competition at the best level of the basic judo categories.”

The president and coach of the Judo Club Uchimata, Roberto Despaigne, reported that “this tournament is part of the competition calendar of the Tenerife Federation of Judo and Associated Sports, in addition to the competitions that we develop on different islands, as well as in other parts of the territory. national and European. “San Sebastián de La Gomera has had its own tournament for three years now, in which athletes from our island can show their sporting skills.”

Despaigne added that “sport is an essential element to transmit respect, education, camaraderie and discipline. “Judo has all the necessary tools to share all these values ​​with the young athletes of La Gomera.”

Organized by the Judo Club Uchimata with the collaboration of the San Sebastián City Council and the Cabildo of La Gomera, the III Domingo Correa Negrín Memorial recognizes the figure of the first Gomero judoka to achieve the black belt and will take place on May 18 in the insular Audillón , with the participation of more than 200 athletes from Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Belgium and La Gomera, who compete in the juvenile, children and cadet categories.
