Breaking the Curse: Indonesian Women’s Badminton Team Wins Silver at Uber Cup 2024

The team led by doubles player Apriyani Rahayu returned home with the second title and a silver medal after losing 0:3 to the host team.

For singles player Ester Nurumi Tri Wardoyo, the experience of competing at the highest level as one of the factors in Indonesia’s victory is something she is very proud of.

“When I was part of the cheer team at the Thomas Cup in Aarhus, of course I thought: What would it be like to play like that in the final? And praise God, our Uber Indonesia 2024 team can play in the final. “There is definitely a sense of joy and pride here,” Esther said.

Furthermore, the younger brother of men’s singles champion Chiko Aura Dwi Vardoyo said he learned a lot from participating in the most prestigious team badminton tournament.

“I have learned a lot, especially how to approach important points, my thinking has also sharpened,” said Esther.

“However, I still feel like I need to improve in the future,” he said.

Meanwhile, Esther had to give up the lead to host representative He Bing Zhao in a close rubber match 10-21, 21-15, 17-21 in 68 minutes.

Regarding the development of the match, Ester admitted that he showed maximum resistance to prolong Indonesia’s breath in the final of the Uber Cup 2024.

“Even though it didn’t work out, I think my game was very good today. “He Bing Zhao is not an easy player (to beat),” Esther said.

“I have been talking to the coach since yesterday about how to deal with him, but I think I am good enough and can play my game today,” he said.

Although she was under a lot of pressure because the home support was very loud on the field, Ester said that the support of the Indonesian team behind her gave her more motivation to win.

“The victory, the atmosphere within (the focus) towards the Chinese (players), but the support of my friends behind me was no less and made me even more excited,” Esther said.

Although they finished in second place, this is Indonesia’s 11th appearance in the Uber Cup final and the second country to win the title after China with 20 appearances.

In the Uber Cup, a combination of senior and junior players graced the red and white team. In the individual competition, Gregoria Mariska Tunjung, Esther Nurumi Tri Vardoyo, Komang Ayu Kahya Devi and Ruzana were the mainstays.
