Tsitsipas Triumphs in Hard-Fought Clay Court Battle at ATP Masters

In a hard-fought match with a lot of pace, it was Tsitsipas who, as so often at this clay court tournament, showed his best tennis. The Greek put Sinner in trouble with his forehand and caught up with a 2-4 deficit in the third set.

The 2021 French Open finalist will contest his seventh ATP Masters final on Sunday. There he will meet either record Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic or Casper Ruud.

“I had to reach a level that I hadn’t played on clay for a long time,” Tsitsipas said afterwards, very satisfied with his performance: “Jannik was an extremely difficult opponent. You saw that all year long. He is very consistent .”

The South Tyrolean is “one of the toughest opponents I have played against so far”. The 25-year-old continued: “I’m proud that I found a way even though there weren’t that many. He gave me a very difficult game and the way I overcame it is one real top performance.”

Stefanos Tsitsipas back in the top ten

With his win against Sinner, who suffered only his second defeat in 2024, Tsitsipas moved back to ninth position in the live world rankings. In February, the 25-year-old fell out of the top ten for the first time in five years after poor performances. It is Tsitsipas’ first win against a top-3 player since 2022, when he defeated Daniil Medvedev in Cincinnati.

During the tournament in Monte Carlo, the Athens native had already impressively beaten Alexander Zverev and Karen Khachanov. Sinner had to have his right leg treated by a physiotherapist twice in the third set and then gradually gave up his lead.
