Tobi Freudenthal says of himself that he is like “ADHD without pills”. As a stand-up comedian, he is at home on stages nationwide – and also at the “Heimspiel”, the #Cityfaces in Broich. To get to this point, the Cologne native says, he took a lot of detours.

He was born in Hamburg. At the age of five he first moved to Jülich in the Nordviertel and, as a teenager, to Barmen with his family. “I have always loved Jülich completely,” he says beaming. There was skating here, buying stickers at “Fischer”, celebrating carnival on the Schlossplatz, taking the disco bus to Himmerich (“that still runs?”), and he had his first romantic experiences in the casemates of the citadel.

Speaking of which: He attended the high school in the fortress for two years after primary school at GGS Nord. “Then I got kicked out of school,” he laughs. I don’t mean that seriously, because it wasn’t misbehavior, it was the grades. Alternatively, he went to secondary school, graduated here and then went on to complete his degree at a vocational college. Even at that time he wanted to take to the stage. “Because my mother has the dance theater, I was always close to the stage. I liked that, those thick theater ropes, that atmosphere, the smell, the costumes…” However, he was always far too afraid of public appearances. Seriously? And that despite the fact that he was already on stage as a child? “I went to the Mini Playback Show twice as a child. That was one of those things here in Jülich. “Suddenly I was such a superstar for a week,” he says with a laugh. Nevertheless, for nine years he only wrote for himself in the “quiet room”. Performances were out of the question until his friend Jan von Weyde registered him with Kunst gegen Cash in 2017. “It was bad for the first year and a half. This nervousness!” Freudenthal rolls his eyes. And how do you get that under control? “Just because of the number of performances. I accept everything. There are many who say: ‘I don’t do a Christmas party, a gala, a carnival, never.’ I do everything, and then you experience things that eventually make you hardened.

However, everything could have turned out differently and Tobi Freudenthal could have lived out his life in a completely regulated manner from a civil point of view. After vocational college, he studied business administration in Aachen. “And although I have really loved math all my life, my diploma was broken by financial mathematics and business mathematics.” I no longer understood anything, dropped out of my studies, completed an apprenticeship as an industrial clerk, worked, earned money, only to realize in my mid-20s: There is even more! And if not now, then never again, and so Tobi Freudenthal packed up his tent, flew to the other end of the world to Australia and spent six months at “Work & Travel” on the east coast and toured the outback.

Returning back to work? No! The man “with ADHD without pills” started over and decided to live his first passion: sports. He already played squash when he was a student in Jülich: “Bundesliga, national team, squad, and I thought to myself, I love it so much…” This was supposed to become a sports degree – but Tobi Freudenthal first had to get his “full Abitur”. . And he did it as one of the best and also received an award for his 1.5 grade point average. With that he went to the university in Cologne to study sports management communication. “I thought maybe you would become a sports commentator because at the same time I was working on hit radio at 100.5 and commentating a bit on the Belgian league for two years.” But that’s not all. “Then I found this advertisement: Mediapark, Startup, Golf, Post Online Magazine. I’m still there today.”

Gradually, your head is spinning: So he is a comedian and presenter, and at the same time a sports journalist with qualifications in business administration (albeit discontinued), industrial clerk and sports management.

“Everyday stories with the audience. He has an answer to every question, a solution to every problem and says what everyone is thinking!” This is what it says on Tobi Freudenthal’s website. With the pool he can draw from, there is no doubt that he can easily fill the next 20 years with his stories on stage.
