MLB The Show 24: A Review of the Latest Baseball Simulator

For a variety of business and legislative reasons, several large companies in the gaming world have started to offer their titles outside of a specific console. This approach is incredibly interesting because on the one hand it allows us to evaluate the contemporary gaming industry and, on the other, it allows us to access video games that would not have been published in this way a decade ago.

“MLB The Show 24” is the latest example in this regard, as it is a project that saw the involvement of “Sony Interactive Entertainment” and which was released on platforms such as PC and Xbox. In this video we will analyze this latest version and try to understand if it deserves readers’ attention.

The difficulty is proportional to how much realism is indicated in the settings. It doesn’t take much to increase the seriousness of the CPU.

The video game in question presents itself to the public as a baseball simulator where you need to defeat the opposing team to win. The regulation follows the classic sports regulations, updated to the most recent edition.

Mainly arcade in nature, “MLB The Show 24” features different game modes, divided within the main available interface. For general convenience we can indicate single/online multiplayer arcade modes, quick games and a “story” mode (called “Road the Show”) in which you follow the exploits of a character created for the occasion. Interesting variations are added to these game methodologies. “Retro”, for example, takes up the style of old baseball-based video gameswith a simplified control system and a specific camera angle.

The overall mechanical system of this video game is overall simple and intuitive, although players can increase the realism to add new controls and information to take into account. All this, however, is supported by the aforementioned mechanics, which turn out to be the main element of the game itself. In particular, the “narrative” modes take on particular importance through dedicated sections. in addition to creating the career of one’s own character, in fact, it is possible to participate in the “Storylines”: special events that retrace some of the key moments of American baseball. This way you can appreciate it “MLB The Show 24” both from a purely recreational point of view and with regards to the historical context.

Among the novelties of this edition, in addition to a general attention to improving technical performance, the world of women’s baseball was implemented. This means that this section is playable in the various modes, including the previous “Storylines”. This is an addition that I appreciate and I found some small differences with the men’s division pleasant. These notes are highlighted, in particular, during the career mode of your character, which can be customized as desired and optimized for specific game modes.

“Road the Show” allows you to guide the adventures of your own character, both male and female. It’s an excellent tutorial, but it deserved better management of the narrative.

As you can imagine, even a video game like “MLB The Show 24” may have defects worthy of attention. Let’s start with what I consider the biggest problem: the chaotic nature of the main menu. It is divided into various sections, containing the most important innovations to consider and the various modes, divided by playful approach (such as “Exhibition”, “Instant Action” and “Play with Friends”). Each of them has tags that indicate whether cooperative, single player or online modes are present. I find that their position and their explanation are, however, not very immediatean element that does not suit all types of buyers. Understand what it offers “MLB The Show 24” It’s harder than you might think and this approach discourages the player from understanding the various options available.

Another aspect that didn’t convince me concerns your character’s career mode, called “Road the Show”. In reality it is pleasant and is an excellent way to implement a tutorial but, in practice, it struggles to convince outside of the gameplay itself. In particular, the entire story is relegated to dialogue structured as lines of text, element that gives little vitality to baseball itself and to the characters that appear. A different approach would certainly have deserved the development team’s attention.

The last flaws I would like to highlight concern the difficulty (which can be very low or very competitive by changing small elements in the settings) e the absence of the Italian language. This decision significantly limits the interest in this video game in the local market and consequently reduces its users.

In conclusion, several things could be said about “MLB The Show 24”. Overall, I find that we are faced with a video game worthy of attention but, unfortunately, it tends to struggle in emphasizing its most interesting playful elements. Anyone who purchases this title will find themselves faced with a video game based on contemporary American baseball, with new mechanical insights for anyone who loves simulation. The difficulty is so broad that even novice players can approach it “MLB The Show 24” without problems, although the increased level of challenge may be more perceptible than you might think.

The “Retro” mode is great for quick games and simplifies the gameplay as much as possible.

What I find interesting about this video game lies in the many modes available, to do alone or with other people. The creation of teams, the possibility of retracing past stories, the implementation of women’s baseball, the managerial mechanics and the quick/custom modes allow you to have access to a great variety of gameplay, useful for anyone looking for a quick or in-depth experience.

Unfortunately, I find the game itself struggles to capitalize on this point. I find that the main problem lies in the management of the main menu, as it does not best catalog the various modes available and fails to emphasize them, thus giving the player colorful and pleasant interfaces, but not very efficient from a purely practical point of view. Furthermore, the absence of the Italian language is extremely perceptible and diminishes the interest of the game in the Italian market.

All in all, “MLB The Show 24” manages to capture attention, but struggles to convince as one would expect. For this reason, we recommend purchasing at a price lower than the launch price (which, for the standard edition, is around €70).
