Juan Cardona Creates Puerto Rico Bilingual Basketball Academy as Part of Education and Sports Legacy

Juan Cardona continues to expand his list of responsibilities.

The leader of the Capitanes de Arecibo in the National Superior Basketball (BSN) is in the process of completing an idea that he conceived years ago: intertwining basketball with educational achievement. Cardona revealed that he recently acquired a school in Morovis through purchase and sale to convert it into the Puerto Rico Bilingual Basketball Academy.

“I am very happy with this project. An idea that I have always had is to leave a legacy for the young people of Puerto Rico because it is the country where I was born, raised and that has supported me,” said Cardona.

The Puerto Rico Bilingual Basketball Academy will not be limited to developing basic basketball skills, it will also offer other disciplines such as volleyball, soccer and swimming, among others.

“We will have different types of sports that will be in charge of professionals in the subjects to expand the magnitude of aid to young people. I was born and raised in Vega Baja and Morovis is the town where Miguel Mercado gave me an opportunity. “When the opportunity to buy a school arose, we pulled the trigger on Morovis,” he noted.

Cardona mentioned that the campus will have accommodation so that students from distant towns can spend the night.

“It is something that I have been thinking about for two years, giving shape and emphasizing the English part. Not all players will reach professional basketball, but they will reach the world of work and the goal is to harvest young people so that they can move forward,” he emphasized.

Cardona said he expects enrollment the first year to be between 350 and 400 students. The campus that was previously the Carmen Sol School, consists of 15 acres of land that will be used for future expansion projects.

“We are not going to skimp. We will welcome everyone and when parents see the facilities they will be impressed. One is always collecting ideas, writing down to give form to what one has in one’s mind. It will be a different program because within the same academic curriculum there will be basketball classes. It will be a normal school, but with the idea that between the sixth and seventh period of classes, one hour will be dedicated to basketball,” he shared.

Cardona stressed that during the next week he will have the skills tests so that the program can be running as soon as summer. Likewise, she emphasized that she maintains her interest in continuing to work at the University of Southern Miss as an assistant on the men’s team.

“I always say there is room to do more. We are going to recruit professional people so that there are no surprises or dramas and that everyone does the job they have to do. There are great minds around me who will be observing the day-to-day operation. I have to let things flow,” she concluded.
