Brother of 22-Year-Old Victim Criticizes “Band of Barbarians” Following Fatal Attack in Grande-Synthe

A 22-year-old man died of his injuries after being found unconscious by emergency services on the night of April 15 to 16 in Grande-Synthe. His brother spoke on BFMTV, criticizing an attack by “a band of barbarians”.

Flowers were left closest to the attack, in a parking lot located near the Grande-Synthe town hall. Several hundred meters further, in private, the relatives of Philippe, a 22-year-old young man who died on Tuesday April 16, following a violent attack suffered the day before, met to pay tribute to a friend, a son or a brother.

“A band of barbarians”

Kelvyn is Philippe’s brother. Shortly after the tragedy, the man tried with BFMTV to find the words after the “inhumane attack” of which his brother was the victim. “I think there’s no real motive,” he explains. “I think it’s a bunch of barbarians who enjoy destroying people’s lives.”

“It’s truly inhumane the state in which they left him to suffer and die,” adds the victim’s brother.

The body of Philippe, 22, was discovered by emergency services in the parking lot of a supermarket in the Grande-Synthe town hall district.

He had multiple fractures and traces of blows, particularly to his face, when he was treated by emergency services. Transported to hospital with a life-threatening prognosis, Philippe died on Tuesday.

According to Kelvyn, his brother was attacked when leaving a friend’s house, living 200 meters from Kelvyn’s house. “And we found Philippe in the parking lot at the crossroads 150 meters from his friend’s house but on the opposite side of my house,” he continues. “He had no quarrel with anyone. He was a loving, smiling person, he was helpful, his brother insists. Everyone liked him.”

“Nothing justifies such aggression”

According to the first testimonies collected on site, Philippe was on the phone at the time of the events. The young person was then allegedly accosted by three people who demanded his cell phone, before physically attacking him. The cell phone was not found on the victim.

“My brother, if he had to give his phone, he would have given his phone, his bag, he had no valuables,” says Kelvyn. “It is barbarism and there is nothing that justifies such aggression,” he continues.

This Wednesday, a minor was arrested and placed in police custody as part of the investigation opened for “attempted intentional homicide by an organized gang”. Kelvyn now wants to let justice do its job in the investigation into his brother’s death.

In Grande-Synthe, an attack similar to that of Philippe took place last weekend. Saturday evening, a 39-year-old man fell into an ambush and a group of people armed with baseball bats in the same neighborhood, when he thought he was going on a date. He managed to take refuge in a business near the scene.
