Adam Silver, the NBA commissioner, said that Jontay Porter could be expelled from the NBA forever if the allegations against him prove true.
Silver did not reveal any details about the ongoing investigation, but Porter has not taken the court with the Toronto Raptors since the league said it was reviewing betting volumes related to his on-court performances.
“I have a long list of disciplinary measures at my disposal,” Silver said. “It is truly a cardinal sin that he is accused of. The last extreme option I have is to ban him from the League. This is the level of authority I have in this case, because there is nothing more serious.”
“It is nothing new that there is unsavory, even illegal, behavior surrounding sports betting. I think my view is that in a regulated environment, you will always have a better chance of spotting behavior like that, especially compared to what would happen if all the bets were placed illegally.”
Recently both coaches and players have complained about the behavior of fans and even referees, which they say is influenced by the ever-increasing importance of gambling.
