The Italian rider Enea Bastianini (Ducati) has won pole for the Portuguese Grand Prix race, the second round of the motorcycle World Championship, ahead of the Spaniards Maverick Viñales (Aprilia) and Jorge Martín (Ducati), who will accompany him this Sunday in the front row of the grill.
The transalpine, half a second off last year’s pole position, confirmed his good feelings in Portimao after being the fastest on Friday. His 1:37.706 allowed him to surpass Viñales by 82 thousandths, who made clear his aspirations surrounded by Ducatis.
Martín, poleman in the first event of the year in Qatar, will start from third place, closing the first starting line, ahead of the current world champion, Francesco ‘Pecco’ Bagnaia (Ducati), who will have to settle for fourth square.
As soon as Q2 began at the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve, Bagnaia was ahead of the Australian Jack Miller (KTM) by less than a tenth. While Alex Márquez (Ducati) and Pedro Acosta (KTM) waited in garages after their time in Q1, things began to move on the track.
After the halfway point of the session, Marc Márquez (Ducati) crashed at turn 15 in his attempt to storm the high zone, from where no one displaced ‘Pecco’ until there were only two minutes left.
The first to achieve this was Jorge Martín (Ducati), who improved the transalpine’s time by just over a tenth, but behind him came Enea Bastianini (Ducati) who, with a time of 1:37.706, rose to the top of the time table and allowed him to take pole position.
Furthermore, Pedro Acosta guaranteed himself seventh starting place, just ahead of Marc Márquez; Alex Rins (Yamaha) will start the test eleventh; and Alex Márquez, who did not set a time in the session, will start twelfth.
Among those who did not manage to advance to Q2, Aleix Espargaró (Aprilia) will start thirteenth; Raúl Fernández (Aprilia) sixteenth; Augusto Fernández (KTM) will start eighteenth; and Joan Mir (Repsol Honda) will do it twentieth. The four Hondas will close the starting grid.
