Former Brazilian footballer Robinho has been arrested in Brazil, where he will serve a 9-year prison sentence for a gang sexual assault committed in Milan, Italy. Robinho, who is 40 years old and is famous in Italy above all for having played for Milan and Real Madrid, was definitively sentenced in Italy in 2022, together with his friend Riccardo Falco.
The story dates back to 2013, when Robinho was playing for Milan. Together with Falco he raped a 23-year-old Albanian girl in a nightclub in Milan. In the following years, several wiretaps emerged in which Robinho implied that he had had sexual relations with the girl, who he also defined as “completely drunk”.
At the time of the conviction, Robinho was in Brazil, a country whose law does not allow the extradition of a Brazilian citizen for crimes committed abroad. At the request of the Italian Ministry of Justice, on March 20 the Brazilian Supreme Federal Court (the equivalent of the Italian Supreme Court) decided to approve the sentence issued in Italy, and therefore make Robinho’s imprisonment in Brazil possible.
Robinho, who has always denied the accusations and maintained that the sexual relationship with the Albanian girl was consensual, was arrested on Thursday in the city of Santos, in the Brazilian state of Sao Paulo.
