One thing is clear: Großkreutz knows Mats Hummels well. After all, the two played together for years at Borussia Dortmund and won the German championship together twice.
But national coach Julian Nagelsmann did not rely on the BVB star recently and did not consider him for the friendly matches in France and against the Netherlands.
Nagelsmann told MagentaTV: “It doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with the individual players. For example, I didn’t decide against Mats Hummels, but rather someone else because I had the feeling that the other person fits the role I see better.”

And further: “Mats is playing a very good season and is a very good central defender. Nevertheless, as a coach it is my job to find the right players for the role, so I have to make a decision.”
It will probably become clear in mid-May whether Hummels will be allowed to play for Germany at the 2024 European Football Championship. This was mentioned as a possible period for the DFB squad announcement.
