Austria’s rowing association is represented at the Olympic Games in Paris with at least two boats. After Magdalena Lobnig, who had already achieved a quota place in the single sculls at last year’s World Cup, Louisa Altenhuber and Lara Tiefenthaler also achieved this feat on Sunday at the qualification regatta in Szeged, Hungary. With second place in the final of the lightweight double sculls, the duo secured their Olympic ticket for Paris.

“I can’t believe it, so much has happened in the last three years. This time we had a solid winter, we came out of training so strong, and then Lara got sick before the first World Cup. These weeks were a terrible test for us. Thank you to the universe that it worked out,” said Altenhuber. “I can’t describe the feeling, I don’t have the words,” said Tiefenthaler.

“Congratulations to the athletes and their coach Christoph Engl. It was an extremely complicated situation with Lara’s illness, but how they withstood this pressure and how the women did it today was really nice to see, and the qualification is really deserved it,” said ÖRV national coach Robert Sens happily.

“We achieved our goal”

The 28-year-old Altenhuber is taking part in the games for the second time after Tokyo 2021 (at that time with Valentina Cavallar), the 24-year-old Tiefenthaler is celebrating her premiere under the sign of the five rings. ÖRV President Horst Nussbaumer was also happy. “I am incredibly proud of the team, we have also achieved our goal of qualifying two boats for the Olympic Games.”

For Lukas Reim and Julian Schöberl it was only enough for fifth place in the lightweight double scull, meaning they missed the quota place. The ÖRV has two more boats at the start at the final qualification regatta in Lucerne (May 19th to 21st). The Olympic regatta takes place from July 27th to August 4th.
