The sporting director of Stade Rennais, Florian Maurice, does not want to see his club “undress to dress the French team” in preparation for the Olympic Games.

Freeing its players so that they can compete in the Paris Olympic Games, not all football clubs are keen. Real Madrid have reportedly written to the French Football Federation (FFF) to warn them of their decision to retain their internationals. Stade Rennais could follow suit. Questioned on the subject at a press conference, Florian Maurice wanted to be firm.

«You can understand that releasing 4 regular players from Stade Rennais, in a competition which is indeed fantastic… You also have to understand the clubs», pleaded the sporting director of the Breton club. Maurice refers in particular to Adrien Truffert, Désiré Doué and Arnaud Kalimuendo, summoned to the French U23 team during the March gathering by coach Thierry Henry.

Stephan worries about “the health of certain players”

Maurice recalled “that a very big club”, Real Madrid, “was very clear and very clear on this”. If Rennes “will do the best possible to help the French team”, “interests must be common”. “We cannot undress to dress the French team,” summarized the Rennes leader.

Coach Julien Stephan followed in the footsteps of his sports director. “The (pre-season) preparation will start very early, mid-June, which would imply reduced vacations, and a risk for the months of September-October-November on the health of certain players. It might require some adjustments so that they can last through the season.», underlined Stephan. Thierry Henry will have to communicate, around May 20, a list of 18 players plus 4 reserves to compete in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, scheduled from July 26 to August 11.
