The crazy $10M scene involving Michael Jordan

Already financially sheltered after his move to the Bulls, Jordan nevertheless made an inconclusive comeback in the ranks of the Wizards. However, it was not his “meager” salary there that motivated him to go there, but rather the prospects for advancement that presented themselves there. However, he ultimately did not achieve his goals there, as Gilbert Arenas recounts in his podcast Gil’s Arena :

No matter how much people say the opposite, it happened like that. When he came to Washington, it was to take control. Besides, it was he who fired Rip Hamilton and all the other young players from the team in order to build a team for the playoffs. And after that, he wanted to join management. But the way he acted towards them as a player, the guys on the team didn’t want that to happen.

So the team called a meeting with management and basically said, “We don’t want him here anymore, we don’t want him to be our leader.” »

Rejected by the Wiz’ locker room, MJ was therefore invited to the office of the former owner of the franchise, Abe Pollin. The latter then took it upon himself to tell him that his future would not be written in DC, and would have tried as best he could to make the pill pass:

So, during this interview, Mr. Pollin said to MJ, “Well, the players voted… The team doesn’t want you. » After that, he handed her a check for $10 million. MJ threw it in the trash and walked away. And it was Mr. Pollin who was set on fire because of that.

From start to finish, His Airness’s passage in Washington proved to be without tail or head.

The rebellion of his teammates at the time could, however, be heard. After all, not only did Jordan’s methods as GM leave something to be desired in the 2000-01 season, but so did his results. Time eventually justified this rejection, since Mike’s tenure as owner of the Hornets proved as unsuccessful and criticized as his stay in the American capital.

If his stay with the Bulls had a profound impact on the NBA community, Michael Jordan did not leave such an indelible mark on the Wizards. His contribution on site was probably not worth $10M, which legitimizes his gesture.
