Football: Austria plays Türkiye against the wall

As announced, ÖFB team boss Ralf Rangnick relied on his best currently available formation in front of 38,500 spectators. In addition to the stars David Alaba and Marko Arnautovic, Marcel Sabitzer was also missing. For the Dortmund legionnaire, who stayed in the hotel with flu-like symptoms, Romano Schmid, who was a “joker” in Slovakia, came into the starting line-up. Konrad Laimer took over the captaincy, with Gregoritsch and Baumgartner serving as dual leaders.

There were five changes to the starting line-up compared to Saturday’s 2-0 win in Slovakia. Regular goalkeeper Alexander Schlager returned to the goal instead of Patrick Pentz. As expected, due to absences, the defense was formed by Stefan Posch, Kevin Danso, the only left-footer Maximilian Wöber and Phillipp Mwene. In midfield, Xaver Schlager struggled instead of Florian Grillitsch.

Schlager hits after 103 seconds

After Schmid won the ball, Turkey goalie Ugurcan Cakir parried a shot from Baumgartner. Schlager used the dust-off to make it 1-0.

Austria gets off to the next dream start

As in Bratislava, the Austrians got off to a furious start. However, the ball didn’t hit the net after six, like Baumgartner’s world record goal, but “only” after 103 seconds. After a borderline ball win by Schmid against Salih Özcan, in which many referees would have ruled a foul, Turkey goalie Ugurcan Cakir parried a shot from Baumgartner. Schlager scored with a shot that was difficult to process.

But then Turkey took command. The team around top star Hakan Calhanoglu was very confident on the ball when building up the game and thus repeatedly evaded the Austrians’ pressing. For the first time, the Turks appeared dangerously in front of the ÖFB goal through Kerem Aktürkoglu, whose attempt from the edge of the penalty area just missed the far corner (6th).

First goal conceded after 416 minutes

After a VAR check there was a penalty: Kevin Danso clumsily went arm first to the ball at a corner. Calhanoglu slammed the ball centrally under the crossbar from the spot (25′). After 416 minutes without conceding a goal, it hit the ÖFB goal again. For the first time since 1997, the Austrians had achieved four clean sheets in a row. A fifth win in a row without conceding a goal would have been a first in the association’s history.

Calhanoglu equalizes with a penalty (25.)

Turkey star Calhanoglu hits the ball from the point centrally under the crossbar (25th) and scores the equalizer from the penalty spot.

At the end of the first half, the ÖFB team came up again. After Phillipp Mwene won the ball, Calhanoglu blocked in front of Laimer (43′). A minute later, Schlager and Nicolas Seiwald followed up decisively after an inaccurate pass by the Turkey captain. The ball went to Gregoritsch, who, with the help of Cakir, scored with a powerful shot from just outside the penalty area.

Gregoritsch scores to make it 2-1 (44th)

Shortly before the break, Gregoritsch struck for the first time and, with the help of Cakir, scored to make it 2-1.

Gregoritsch scores before and after the break

After the break, Gregoritsch scored his first brace in the ÖFB team. The Freiburg striker used a free-standing Schmid corner with his head. Ten minutes later he was allowed to start from the spot. After a situation that was originally wrongly whistled for offside, the video assistant decided on a penalty because Kaan Ayhan bumped into Laimer. Gregoritsch placed the ball in the left corner. It was the 29-year-old’s 15th goal in his 53rd international match, his eighth in the last ten ÖFB appearances.

Gregoritsch adds (48.)

Immediately after the break, Gregoritsch followed up and scored with a header to make it 3-1.

The Austrians had much more control of the game after the break. Goalkeeper Schlager had to intervene for the first time when Juventus super talent Kenan Yildiz pulled back (66th). Rangnick only made his first substitution in the 70th minute, with Alexander Prass replacing Mwene at left-back.

Gregoritsch sinks a penalty (59.)

And Gregoritsch hasn’t had enough. The goalgetter scores a hat-trick with a penalty.

Curious scene: 5:1 instead of 4:2

The supposed 4:2 by substitute Baris Alper Yilmaz was withdrawn after video study. Instead, Austria received another penalty because of a foul by Cenk Özkacar on Posch on the edge of the penalty area. This time Baumgartner was allowed to compete, the Leipzig professional scored in the third international match in a row. Deep into stoppage time, Hartberg striker Entrup also scored his first goal in the team uniform with a header after an assist from substitute Wimmer.

Baumgartner penalty makes it 5:1 (78.)

Baumgartner is allowed to take the second penalty. The world record shooter doesn’t miss the chance and increases to 5:1.

The ÖFB selection landed its biggest win since a 6-0 win against Latvia in the European Championship qualifiers in Salzburg in September 2019. Five wins in a row were last achieved in autumn 2020, also under Rangnick’s predecessor Franco Foda. The Rangnick team has only lost one of their last 14 international matches. In the last eight duels with the Turks, Austria had only won one victory.

The European Championship countdown continues in May

For the first time since 1982, the ÖFB team managed to start the year of participation in the tournament with two wins. The ÖFB team continues at the end of May with the final preparation phase for the European Championship finals. After a course in Windischgarsten, there is a home game in the Ernst Happel Stadium against Serbia (June 4th, 8:45 p.m., live on ORF1) and the European Championship dress rehearsal in St. Gallen against Switzerland (June 8th, 6:00 p.m.). the program. At the Euro, Austria starts the tournament against France on June 17th (9 p.m.).

Voices about the game:

Ralf Rangnick (ÖFB team boss): “Before the game I would have said that a 6-1 win was unlikely, but not impossible. We got off to a great start with the quick goal. Then there was a phase from the 25th to the 40th minute when we had problems. The goal just before half-time did us another good. Well, the second half was almost perfect. We allowed little to nothing. The second half was of course ideal for us. We played against a strong opponent. We had problems, especially in the phase (in the first half, note) when we didn’t manage to get into the duels properly. Germany didn’t lose to them at home for nothing.”

“But I found it impressive how we found ourselves again in the difficult phase. The guys who came in showed that they wanted to be there. Four out of six goals were typical goals from us after quickly winning the ball. So it’s not easy to play against us. Today we have already seen that we have decent quality across the board. It was an enormous team energy from everyone, an extremely strong team performance.”

Michael Gregoritsch (three-time ÖFB goalscorer): “I am of course extremely proud and happy that I managed to do that. We started very, very well. We then had a short phase in which we gave up the game. We got out of halftime really well, it was a great day for us.”

“It gives us incredible self-confidence, but the next game starts at 0-0. We used the course to strengthen our strengths. Presence on the pitch, with and against the ball, is our strength. We are a very unpleasant team. The squad is very broad. Three leading players are missing, but that was still handled very well.”

Xavier Schlager (ÖFB goalscorer): About his goal to make it 1-0: “It was important that I followed up, that I was there. That was a great start and we got into the game well. We are brutally efficient right now. It’s really good that we don’t need as many chances to score goals. But you could see that they can also kick really well and we have problems. It’s important that we not only see the good things, but also the not so good things. The result obscures that a little.”

Christoph Baumgartner (ÖFB goalscorer): “An extremely energetic performance from us, especially in the second half. We put them under extreme pressure. They did very, very well in the first half, but we also won the ball well there. That was a very, very deserved victory. I don’t know whether it was well deserved.”

About his penalty goal: “I asked Michi (Gregoritsch, note) – we are good friends -: Will you give me the ball? I’m very grateful to him because a four-pack (for Gregoritsch) would also be sensational. For me personally, it’s important for my self-confidence that I shot it in.”
